Disenchanted

Marina has always has a love of princesses. Now that she's older that hasn't really changed. We decided to see Disenchanted, a princess spoof, at a dinner theater with some friends.

Since it was a princess show, Marina decided to wear her Ariel dress. We took a few photos outside the theater before going to our seats. One of our servers was playing Snow White in the show.

After we ate, we settled in for the show. It was a comedy with some mature themes. Marina laughed throughout. She was clearly enjoying herself. At intermission Marina enjoyed a black forest cake for dessert.

After the show was over, we met up with some of the actors we know. We got photos with Snow White and Sleeping Beauty in their costumes. We also caught up with the frog princess. She was the one who encouraged us to see the show. Just before we left we managed to get pictures with the actresses playing Mulan and Ariel.

The drive home seemed to go quickly but it was still pretty late when we got home.

A Mermaid and Her Mom

A few months ago Marina and I went to a paint and sip class and made mermaid paintings. We decided we wanted to do another one. This time it was a class for mothers and daughters to create two paintings that go together. We both wore Ariel shirts. 

When we arrived we saw that most of the daughters were pretty young. That didn't bother Marina at all. We bought drinks and found our spots near the front of the room.

The pictures were already drawn in for us and we had fun painting them. Marina added some great detail to the mermaid tail. We decided to make the hair of our mermaids like our own. Marina's turned out great! Especially considering that she had to mix the colors to make brown.

Near the end of the class, Marina got a bit frustrated with the final touches. So I helped her fix the issues. Once the class was over we stopped for lunch. We both felt better after we ate.

Seize the Day

Last summer, Marina and I saw the musical Newsies. We both really enjoyed it. So when another local theater announced it as their winter show, we were excited to see it again. Marina wanted to look like she was in the show, so she wore pants with a brown sweater and a vest. She added the cap I bought her when we saw Newsies last year.

We picked up drinks and snacks before going to our seats. Marina really liked talking to the two young ladies behind us while we were waiting for the show to start.The dance routines were full of energy and the music was fantastic. We were both very impressed with the actress playing Katherine.

After the show, we took the time to talk with some of the cast members. We spent the most time with Katherine. Marina also got the chance to pose for a photo with a large group of the actors. Once we took our pictures we were ready to go home. 

 

Hooded

Last year Marina and I went to opening night of Songs For A New World which featured a friend of ours in one of the lead roles. He told us that he would be in the show Hooded this year and Marina was excited to go. We had a change in schedule and were about to attend opening night of Hooded tonight.

Before the show, Marina and I talked about some of the political messages in the show so she would better understand the message. When we arrived, we saw the director of the show. She was interested in Marina’s reaction to the show since the characters are supposed to be her age.

 The show overall was very funny. Marina seemed to understand most of it. The end was extremely serious and sad. After it was over, explained to her how it fit into the world we live in.

After the show was a reception with pizza. Marina was happy to have a soda and some pizza. She got a chance to tell Betty what her thoughts were on the show and we caught up with our friend for a while. We also gave him some photos from previous shows. While we were there, we got a chance to meet the playwright. He was pleased that Marina liked the play and he told her that he wrote it for young people like her.

After over an hour at the reception, we went home.

Cuba!

We haven’t been to the nature and science museum in a while. They currently have an exhibit about Cuba. Marina had already seen it but I hadn’t, so we decided to see it today.

When we arrived at the museum we were able to find a parking place right away. So we went right in and went to the third floor to see the Cuba exhibit. It wasn’t a large exhibit but it had many interesting items on display. We saw a vintage car as well as tobacco drying. Marina’s favorite part was the underwater coral reef.

After we finished the Cuba exhibit, Marina wanted to go to health exhibit. It was fairly crowded so she just wandered through at first. She saw that a show about Optical Illusions was coming up. So we sat down to watch it. The show was really fun and Marina befriended the host. After it was over she even got to wear the actress’ hat!

The last place Marina wanted to visit was the space exhibit. What she really wanted to visit was the Virtual Arcade. We got in line to try the Jurassic Sea ride. After a bit of a wait it was our turn. The ride was fairly intense and I could hear Marina’s reactions throughout. After the ride we decided to go home.

Annie Get Your Gun

In fourth grade Marina made a puppet of Annie Oakley. Since then she has had an interest in her. When I saw a local dinner theater was performing Annie Get Your Gun, Marina was excited to see it. We invited friends to join us. It’s been a long time since the four of us went out together and we were all looking forward to it.

Marina wanted to dress like the period. She picked out a Western looking skirt but had trouble finding a shirt to go with it. I found a shirt from my closet that she liked and it fit her, so she was happy. She added flowers in the back of her hair and a feather barrette

Our friends picked us up. We were all excited to be going out together. We all ordered dinner. Marina got the Chicken Cordon Bleu as usual. She also chose the chocolate pie for dessert. We all enjoyed our food and then we were ready to see the show.

From the beginning, Marina was completely absorbed in the show. She laughed at the jokes and was especially happy when t the song “Anything You Can Do” started. After the performance was over we asked to meet the actors playing Annie, Frank and Sitting Bull. They all came out and we were able to get a photo of Marina with them. Then we headed home. It was fun to spend time with our friends.
