Lea Salonga Concert

This evening, Marina and I had tickets to see Lea Salonga in concert. Marina knows her as the singing voice of Disney’s Jasmine and Mulan. I was concerned that she might be bored since she wasn’t familiar with much of the music being performed. However, the performances were so good that Marina stayed engaged the whole time. She was especially happy when she sang “Go the Distance” from Hercules and “Reflection” from Mulan. She finished the first act with “I’d Give My Life For You” from Miss Saigon.

After intermission, Lea performed “Burn” from Hamilton. Marina was thrilled. The highlight of the show was when she performed “A Whole New World” from Aladdin. Since it’s a duet, she asked for a volunteer from the audience to sing with her. The guy who she picked turned out to be a very good singer. After the concert we talked with the man who sang on stage. It was fun to hear how excited he was about the experience.

As the concert wrapped up, Lea Salonga thanked everyone for spending Saturday night with her. Marina called out “It’s the best way.” Lea heard and thanked her. As we were leaving, Marina asked me if we could see Miss Saigon when the tour comes to Denver. I told her I was already planning for that.

Mother's Day Tea

Marina and I don’t have a set plan for Mother’s Day each year. We tend to pick something to do together that seems fun. This year we decided to have high tea at our favorite tea room. They recently announced that Mother’s Day would be their last tea service and we wanted to say goodbye. (They are planning pop up holiday events so we will hopefully still be able to attend their teas.)

We arrived early, so we sat and relaxed together. It wasn’t too long before we were taken to our table. As usual, it was beautifully set. Shortly after the tea arrived, we had our first course – chicken a la king. Marina had never tried it before. She was a bit tentative when she learned there were peppers in it. Once I picked them out she happily finished the rest.

Next we the sandwiches, scones and sweets were brought to the table on a tiered tray. Marina was excited to have egg salad and the cucumber sandwich. She tried the salmon and decided she liked it. Once she got to her cram scone, she was pretty excited. But she wasn’t able to eat her sweets, she was too full.

After tea, we talked with both owners before we left. We dropped Judy off at her house and spent the rest of the day relaxing at home.

Super Hero Night

This evening, Marina and I had plans to have dinner with our friends again. It was Super Hero Night. Marina was excited to see them. She dressed in her Harley Quinn clothes and asked me to put her hair in pigtails.

We arrived just as the event was getting started. Our friends showed up a little after we did. Wonder Woman and Spiderman showed up a short while later.

The girls each got a cape and mask to wear. They looked so cute in them! Marina took them both over for superhero training.

 We checked the schedule and saw they have more princess nights coming up in June, so we will likely get back together for some of those.

Spring at the Garden

It’s felt like a long winter and Marina and I are definitely ready for spring. Today the weather was beautiful, so we decided to check out the spring flowers at the botanic gardens. I made us a big brunch before we left the house.

When we arrived at the botanic gardens we discovered that lots of people had the same idea. It took a while to find a place to park and we had to walk a few blocks to get to the entrance.

Once inside we bought drinks and then we started walking around. There is a current exhibit of sculptures of the human form throughout the gardens which we looked at as well. We were amazed at how many different varieties of tulips we saw. The irises were also blooming and we saw a few daffodils were still around.

We were most excited to see the Lilac Garden. The lilacs weren’t in full bloom, but there were enough that we could smell them. We wandered through a few other parts of the garden before walking back to the car. We’d had a very busy weekend and wanted to relax a bit.

The Marriage of Figaro

We had tickets to see The Marriage of Figaro tonight. Marina wore her floor length purple and black dress. I added a necklace and black gloves. She looked so glamorous!

One of our friends was joining us for the opera. She met us at our house and we all drove downtown together. We decided to have dinner before the show. The food came out quickly and it was all really good. After we ate, we went to the opera house for the show. They had the red carpet out since it was opening night. That made it a bit more exciting.

We sat down with a bit of time before the opera began. Marina was excited to see it. The Marriage of Figaro is a comic opera and Marina enjoyed the silly situations throughout. After the show, she said she really liked it. We were able to get to our car quickly after the show. We’d had a full day!

May the Fourth Be With You

May 4 is Star Wars Day. Marina and I decided to celebrate by going to the event at the air and space museum. Marina wore her Rey costume and I dressed as Qi’ra. When we arrived there was a line to get in. We passed the time by talked to the two young men in line behind us.

When we finally got in, we immediately saw Darth Vader, so we got photos with him. We saw that certain numbers on the wristbands were able to get in the X-Wing Fighter. It turned out mine was one of them, but the time was later in the day. Marina was excited about that.

We wandered around looking at the booths and taking pictures with cosplayers. We went on a bounty hunter scavenger hunt which was fun. Marina also got into the cockpits of some of the planes.

When we were ready to leave, we asked if we could go into the X-Wing early. Since there wasn’t much of a line, we were able to do it quickly. The two men we met in the line saw we got into the X-Wing and I could tell they really wanted to do it as well. So we asked they be able to join us and they were able to get into it as well.

We made a final sweep around the museum before heading out. As we did we ran into Kylo Ren. Marina was happy to get a photo with him.

Caroline or Change

We had tickets this evening to see Caroline or Change at the Aurora Fox. I wasn’t very familiar with the story, but we knew quite a few of the cast members and we wanted to see them. We arrived at the theater early and bought drinks before we sat down. We talked with the couple sitting next to us as we waited for the show to begin.

The show was incredible. The cast was very talented and they told the story beautifully. Marina and I were both very moved by it. After the show was over, We waited to talk with our friends in the cast.

It was late by the time we left the theatre, but we’d had a really good night.
